Your Opportunity
Stantec seeks a highly motivated Principal level Urban and/or Environmental Planner to join us in our Bay Area locations (Sacramento, Redding, Rocklin, Walnut Creek, San Francisco, San Jose, Chico, and Nevada City). We are looking for a team member with 10 to 15 years of experience, who has experience working within a local government or with a local government in a consulting capacity. The position will support and lead various public and private sector planning projects including policy, entitlements, CEQA documentation, regulatory and design projects. Typical projects include Mixed Use, Transit Oriented Developments, affordable housing, Policy Planning Specific Plans, land use regulations, design guidelines and community outreach. The ideal candidate would have experience in leading a variety of analyses and evaluations related to California’s planning and entitlement process on a wide range of development and planning projects throughout Northern California. This is a mid to senior level opportunity in our ever-growing team of professionals focusing urban and environmental planning in California. We are looking for a professional consultant with a strong working knowledge of Urban Planning concepts and policies, compliance regulations, environmental permitting, and land use and zoning issues.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Identifying and developing new opportunities, preparing effective proposals, and actively developing new business with new and existing clients.
- Prepares materials in support of general plans, master plans, specific plans, community plans, zoning updates, housing elements, grant applications, corridor plans, and other regulatory and policy planning projects
- Manages planning projects, including budgeting, staffing, and timelines

- Manages planning projects, including budgeting, staffing, and timelines
- Preparing CEQA/NEPA and other planning/environmental documents
- Working with a multi-disciplinary team
- Active involvement in planning/environmental professional organizations such as AEP or APA
- Collaborates with other leaders to proactively engage clients and develop new opportunities, as well as identifying opportunities to serve our clients through our many on-call contracts for planning services throughout California
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Relevant recent experience in an Urban Planning or Policy Planning role specifically including Policy Planning, General Plans and Specific Plans.
- Experience working with public agencies, private development companies and/or law firms
- Familiarity with California planning practices, laws, and requirements
- Strong research, analysis, and reporting abilities.
- Focused on detail-orientation skills and capable of managing large data sets.
- Are self-starting, team-oriented professional with excellent written and communication skills that can manage multi-disciplinary teams comprised of internal staff and subcontractors.
- Should be familiar with review and analysis of scientific data, maps, and drawings.
- Experience with permitting and CEQA and NEPA.
- Provide support in managing task orders/projects and delivering high quality work products to Stantec’s multi-disciplinary project teams.
Education and Experience
- 10- 15 years of experience performing environmental planning and permitting work
- Bachelor’s Degree in urban planning, regional planning, city planning, public policy, government administration, environmental studies, natural resource management or related field
- AICP, CEP, or advanced degree a plus
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
