Your Opportunity

Stantec is currently looking for an intermediate cost control person to be part of our team on a permanent full-time position. Reporting to the program controls manager, the cost control person will provide the program manager and project managers with viable information for effective management and cost control of the various projects and will be accountable for implementing robust processes, checks and balances to determine Budget, Actual Cost and Estimate at Completion
The Cost controller must demonstrate an aptitude for efficiency, problem solving, and resourcefulness with a deep commitment to the Program goals.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
  • Provide support for the development of the detailed work breakdown structure (WBS) and cost breakdown structure (CBS).
  • Support the preparation of monthly cost control and project progress reports, cost variance analysis reports, change logs, and dashboards, based on established standardized criteria in terms of content and presentation (budgets, commitments, changes, variances, performances), and according to the approved work breakdown structure.
  • Ensure regular communication with project team and other stakeholders regarding program Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), current budget, actual cost and forecast to complete. 
  • Control and check the program invoices and follow up on approval and payment. Work with the accounting department to ensure alignment/balance with financial statements and other financial reports.
  • Issue Purchase Orders and Subconsultant agreements and change orders and maintain an agreement and change log.
  • Review and process all Subconsultant Invoices and assist Consultants with any compliance issues 
  • Work with the project team on contract budgets, progress payments, invoicing processes, contract amendments and closeout.
  • Provide the technical support to all contractors to ensure the project cost control systems and processes are maintained to program standards.
  • Ensure compliance with all Federal, Provincial, and local regulations, particularly applicable funding agreement requirements.
  • Other related duties assigned.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Experience of managing pursuits and successfully delivering large industrial water projects with $5M in engineering fees (or higher).
  • Strong client base and understanding of the Industrial Water consulting and engineering business and global Industrial Water business
  • Strong understanding of the EPC/EPCM Model 
  • Proven project management and technical skills applicable to the delivery of industrial water projects.
  • Entrepreneurial orientation with understanding of the business development challenges of a consulting services provider and with a demonstrated track record of building business and generating revenue.
  • Attention to detail and can manage projects and business development activities simultaneously, working under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to create and maintain relationships across Stantec’s practices and geographies 
  • Proven ability to effectively lead, challenge, and inspire staff to work together cohesively as a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to champion both technical and customer service excellence with conviction and purpose.
  • Strong written, verbal, analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Possess the highest degree of integrity.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Chemical or Civil/Environmental engineering. Master’s preferred.
  • A Professional Engineering designation and registration or eligibility to register with EGBC is required. PMP or similar would be an asset.
  • At least 15 years of relevant professional experience, demonstrating diverse experience in public and municipal sectors associated with the planning, design, and construction of water infrastructure projects.
  • At least 5 years of experience with client relations and developing business.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License.



Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
