Your Opportunity
The Assessment, Permitting and Compliance Team has an opportunity for an experienced intermediate environmental monitor. The successful candidate will join our diverse team of professionals as a site lead environmental monitor/inspector, primarily within the Lower Mainland area.
Your Key Responsibilities
- The primary tasks to be performed, and the responsibilities of the EM and supporting personnel, will include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Promote a strong health and safety culture and actively participate in Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment Program
- Perform work under a responsible person (e.g., Environmental Manager or Project Director) and monitor construction for compliance with the permit conditions, contract documents, applicable regulations and guidelines, and any management plans including Construction Environmental Management Plans.
- Communicate with office-based project team about site conditions and issues
- Monitor activities that may affect soil, fish, wildlife, marine mammals and water quality
- Participate in daily and weekly project and safety meetings with external contractors
- Brief workers on environmentally sound approaches and practices
- Coordinate monitoring equipment (sourcing, cost, shipments) and work with the equipment manager regarding calibration and maintenance
- Recommend and develop appropriate mitigation measures with those responsible for the environmental management of the project and the contractor/site personnel
- Prepare environmental documentation for clients and government agencies, e.g., daily and weekly monitoring reports on all environmental measures that are required and being undertaken at a site and environmental monitoring results
- Prepare notifications for spills and communicating with regulators and stakeholders for issues related to water quality and marine mammal and fish observations for responsible persons
- Spill response guidance, monitoring cleanup, and reporting
- Oversee the contractor’s management of excavated soil (and possibly contaminated) soil, groundwater, and storm water via disposal and/or on-site treatment
- Prepare cost estimates of labour and expenses for monitoring work, and support proposals being collaboratively developed with the team
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Strong interpersonal and social skills and ability to interact across a broad range of audiences and technical backgrounds including contractors, internal and external clients and regulatory agencies
- Collaborative in decision-making and keen to learn new skills and responsibilities alongside the team
- Proven technical, communication and organization skills
- Able to deal with changing conditions and priorities while in the field
- Good listening and synthesis skills to understand different groups’ constraints affecting construction and monitoring activities.
- Able to work full-time (during construction periods 8-12 hours/day), overtime or time on weekends may be required when needed during construction
- Understanding of construction monitoring/environmental inspection
- Knowledge of current federal and provincial government regulatory requirements including the Fisheries Act, Water Sustainability Act, Wildlife Act, Canadian Navigable Waters Act, Canadian Environmental Protection Act, Environmental Management Act, and Heritage Conservation Act, and
- Experience with:
- leading meetings of environmental staff
- leadership in safety and responsible for implementation health and safety programs
- working on around heavy equipment and near water
- Capable of working with and guiding clients and contractors
- Manages and prioritizes time when executing multiple parallel objectives
- Thrives in an environment with diverse and dynamic project activities and schedules and adapting to changes
Education and Experience
A Bachelor’s degree or technical diploma in a relevant field
Having or working towards a Professional accreditation (e.g., CPESC, RBTech, RPBio, PAg)
Minimum of 3 years of experience in environmental monitoring and inspections within British Columbia.
Familiarity with construction activities and working safely at a construction site, roadways, and industrial lands.
Familiarity with taking water quality measures, soil samples, general wildlife and vegetation identification and electrofishing are assets.
Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
