This opportunity is based in the Mississauga, ON office with opportunities for some remote work and travel with field work. Our Acoustical engineers provide specialized services to a wide variety of sectors including industry, government, architecture, transportation, and buildings. Our practitioners offer a full suite of services including permitting, monitoring, modeling, planning, policy studies, design, and control.
General Description
The role of Acoustic Instrumentation Technician is a great opportunity for those just joining the workforce, or a more seasoned technician familiar with noise and vibration instrumentation and equipment. The position will involve extensive field work and some travel to conduct noise and vibration measurements using laboratory-quality equipment and instrumentation. The position will also involve the maintenance and management of the Stantec acoustic instrumentation.
Stantec will provide and support technical training for those with applicable background in electronics or acoustic measurement equipment (e.g., microphones).
Stantec supports a safe working environment, especially when field work of staff is involved, and attention to health and safety is expected of the candidate.
Your Key Responsibilities
Equipment
- Research and review equipment standards (e.g., ISO, ANSI) related to noise and vibration equipment.
- Understand acoustic equipment required for measurement of noise and vibration. This will include sound level meters, noise monitors, vibration measurement equipment (e.g., Coco), vibration monitors, and building acoustics measurements. Specialized experience in niche measurement (e.g., multi-channel vibration conditioning, and sound intensity measurement) will also be supported. This will require learning equipment manuals and attending supplier training where provided.
- Working with our technical suppliers to calibrate and repair equipment and investigate equipment measurement anomalies as they arise.
- Organize and maintain equipment storage space
- Maintain an accurate inventory of equipment locations to enable supporting other team members for project planning
- Develop equipment usage budgets for inclusion in project proposals
- Coordinating equipment recovery tracking to retain project funds to support the instrumentation
- Support standard operating procedures for instrumentation applications
- Manage all equipment calibration and other documentation for retrieval and review by Stantec engineers
- Provide in-office training to staff for equipment usage and storage
- Design and build custom equipment enclosures or installation plans, if required to conduct specialized measurements
Field Work
- Organize and coordinate equipment for projects, ensuring equipment is available and/or coordinate rentals for additional equipment needs
- Prepare Health and Safety documentation related to fieldwork
- Conduct field measurements using the noise/vibration instrumentation. Note fieldwork may require travel and extended periods away (e.g., weeks to a month). Field work may also involve nighttime and overnight work. Field work may also be required on an on-call basis (e.g., within 24hrs). Field work will be in all seasons, under various field conditions (e.g., snow)
- Coordinate and remotely train local Stantec field staff, who may be unfamiliar with instrumentation and fieldwork
- Download and analyze noise and vibration data. Prepare data (e.g., spreadsheets) for Stantec engineers to interpret and analyze
- Prepare monitoring and measurement reports for Stantec engineers.
- Develop templates (e.g., Word) and automation (e.g., Excel macros) for reporting and data analysis. Stantec's digital resource team will be available to help in this development.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Experience or education in electronics and/or instrumentation. This can be either technical college (e.g., mechanical or electrical) or electronics apprentice. Experience with using sound measurement equipment (e.g., studio engineering) may also be considered.
- Desire to work with instrumentation, including repair and diagnosis of the equipment. Small electronics repair (e.g., soldering) would be an asset
- Desire to conduct fieldwork, as there will be extensive outdoor work (with exposure to the elements) required for the position. Must be available to be away for periods (weeks up to a month) to complete fieldwork.
- Possess a valid driver's license and passport, as international travel (e.g., US) will be required
- Access or ownership of a personal car/vehicle
- Demonstrated organizational skills, both with tracking equipment and representing the measurement data is required
- Creative, organized, and able to multi-task while working independently
- Diligent and detail oriented with the desire to learn
- Flexibility in scheduling required for travel related to site surveys
- Working knowledge of the software (e.g., Microsoft Office, CAD, etc.). Automation with programming or macros would be an asset.
- Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
